Offgrid Cabin Retreat/ Mendocino (2020)

Enchanted forest , magic meadows, and sweeping ocean views this site has an outer worldly, dream like feel. Within 3 miles the landscape goes from some of Cali’s most beautiful; coastline w/ a historical lighthouse to green pastures then a steep climb into the mossy redwoods above the fog line in the “banana belt” .
Kristen’s favorite design principle is “to let nature in” and this particular project had little separation between indoors and out. That was both part of the beauty of the project and also the design challenge. Being “offfgrid” means not hooked up to electrical nor water or septic. We put in minimal infrastructure like solar panels and a 5000 gallon water tank that had to be rolled up a hill so gravity could be used a the “pump source”.
The recreational cabin is 10x12 and the ceiling maxed to code height of 12’ ft so we could use that extra vertical space for a bedroom/loft. The space below could remain open (free of a bed occupying the space and be used for a variety of things from office, art studio or chill space. The build went quickly and the structure was erected in about a week due to the owner/builder having a summer commitment in Alaska. Kristen stayed behind to work the site, plant gardens and continue to network and gather resources for future parts of the project. it stand out.
